History of the National Library of Thailand


                           

1905

The National Library of Thailand formerly known as Vajirayana Library for the Capital City” which was established on October 12, 1905. His Majesty King Chulalongkorn was graciously pleased to establish the amalgamation of three royal libraries naely, the Vajirayana Library, the Mandira Dhamma Library and the Buddhasasanasangaha Library. At the beginning of its establishment, it was located at Sala Sahathai Samakhom Hall in the Grand Palace. 

1916

His Majesty King Vajiravudh (King Rama VI) was graciously pleased to move the Vajirayana Library for the Capital City to the Thawornwatthu Building. King Rama VI presided over the opening ceremony on January 6, 1916. 

1926

His Majesty King Prajadhipok (King Rama VII) was graciously pleased to separate the Vajirayana Library for the Capital City into two libraries, namely the Vajirayana Library, a storage of manuscripts and gold patterned cabinets at the Siwamokkhaphiman Hall, and the Vajiravudh Library, a storage of books at Thawornwatthu Building. 

1966

The National Library of Thailand has constructed a new building at Tha Wasukri on Samsen road and grand opening on May 5, 1966. The Book collection was moved from the Vajiravudh Library to the National Library of Thailand at Tha Wasukri. 

1981

His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn (King Rama X) was formally given the title of the Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn presented on behalf of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej (King Rama IX) on January 1, 1981 at the opening ceremony of King Vajiravudh Memorial Hall where provides the royal literatures collection of His Majesty King Vajiravudh (King Rama VI). 

1994
Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn while holding the title of Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn presided over the opening ceremony of Princess Sirindhorn Music Library on June 3, 1994 where provides the collection of musical studies and research.  

1997
His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej (King Rama IX) was graciously pleased to preside over the opening ceremony of King Rama IX Music Library on April 24, 1997. The library was built to be the information center for the music collection of His Majesty including the related royal duties. 

2011
The new building of National Library of Thailand was constructed on the same area and opened on October 3, 2011. 

2017
The National Library of Thailand has renovated the building 1 (the old building) to be remodeling of the building for comfortable and suited for modern lifestyle with new library services technology. The building has been opened since October 12, 2017.
